Pillows: types and how to choose the best one?

How to choose the right pillow?

Pillows are a very personal product, and mainly the responsible of our daily rest.

That is why we need to keep some aspects in mind when choosing a pillow:

– Compensation is also important: note the properties of the stuffing materials to see if its ventilation is good or not.

– Our position when asleep.

– A pillow must ensure our cervical and thoracic vertebrae form the same angle as when standing up.

– To sleep without a pillow may cause hypertension and cervical contractures.

Care of the pillows

To sleep without a pillow makes the neck have hypertension.

To sleep on your back with a thick pillow or without one facilitates the appearance of contractures.

The most advisable is to sleep with thin pillows. This way the cervical and thoracic vertebrae form the same angle as when a person is standing up.

If you sleep on a side you cannot choose a thin pillow, since this makes the weight of the head lean on the shoulders and forces the inclination of the spine.

To sleep on one’s stomach is not recommended at all. The lumbar spine and the neck is are turned up.

A good habit is to sleep slightly on a side. For that, the leg bellow (the one supporting the body) must be stretched out and the other one must be bended as well as the hip. That is, forming an angle of about 45 degrees.

To sum up: The neck’s position and the vertebrae must look as similar as possible as when we are standing up.

Why are some pillows more expensive than others?

1)Because of the material of the cover.

2)Because of the quantity, quality of the stuffing and the ventilation of the pillow. If it is viscolastic it gives weightlessness sensation and pressure relief. The most expensive are the latex ones of different heights with wild goose virgin down-filled and European adult duck. The latest innovation is a pillow treated with aloe vera.

Pillow types:

1) Feathers:

they mold to one’s neck. The problem is that they are hot.

2) Polyester fibers:

The problem is washing them. If it is bad quality, it will get compressed. That is why it is important to choose a good quality one.

3) Latex:

It adapts to one’s form and weight of the head. It can combine with feathers and down. The intermediate hardness ones are the most recommended.

4) Cervical:

Made to prevent and relief cervical pains. They try to hold the neck, the back of the neck and the head to protect cervical at all moments. They are swing-formed. They are divided into four zones from most to less hardness. These pillows are normally comfortable to people that sleep face up.

5) Conventional down pillow:

Down-filled pillows offer a good kind of support for those who need a soft pillow. The ones filled with goose down offer more softness and a larger use life than those filled with duck down, that are more economic.

6) Bicompartment pillow:

Sometimes, people want a pillow with the softness and comfort of the down but with a greater degree of firmness. This kind of pillow is made with 3 independent compartments. The central core is filled with calibrated latex flakes, to offer a good degree of support. The exterior compartments are filled with down to offer the tact and softness that only this product can offer.
